Female Passenger Passes Away on US-Lagos Flight; Plane Diverted to Togo Due to Poor Weather Conditions

Delta Air Lines' flight from Atlanta to Lagos experienced significant delays and a mid-air medical emergency, according to a passenger and an official statement from the airline.

The A330-200 aircraft, carrying 215 passengers, was originally scheduled to arrive in Lagos at 10 am on Monday but landed nearly eight and a half hours late.

The journey was disrupted when a passenger tragically passed away during the flight. The airline has not released the name of the deceased. Following this incident, the crew opted to divert the flight to Lome, the capital of Togo, due to unfavorable weather conditions in Nigeria and the need to refuel.

Upon landing in Lome, the flight was further delayed due to weather-related issues, causing frustration among the passengers. A Nigerian passenger, known as @samson_Goddy on his X profile, shared details from his experience, confirming that there were two medical emergencies aboard, including the death of a woman.

"He also mentioned that the aircraft had to make an unexpected landing in a different country after running out of fuel, resulting in a grounding of over five hours.

"Delta Air Lines issued a statement acknowledging the incident and the diversion to Lome. "Delta flight 54 ATL-LOS has landed safely in LOS after an onboard customer medical situation and subsequent diversion to LFW due to weather.

"We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travel plans," the statement read.

The airline expressed regret for any difficulties or delays caused to passengers' travel plans. It was learned that the passengers were compensated for the inconvenience.

Responding to further inquiries on X, @samson_Goddy elaborated on the circumstances of the woman’s death, suggesting that she might have suffered a heart attack three hours into the flight. He mentioned that a doctor was present onboard, who attended to the woman, but sadly, she did not survive.

"This series of unfortunate events highlights the challenges and unpredictabilities of air travel, especially when compounded by medical emergencies and adverse weather conditions.
