Ceasefire Urged by Bandit Leader Through Video Message to Governor of Zamfara and Armed Forces
A video that became widespread online the past Thursday, shared by one Imran Mohammed, showcases a plea from a leading figure among the Zamfara State bandits, Kachalla Garba Aminu. In this plea, Aminu calls for a halt to hostilities and expresses a strong desire for the initiation of peace talks with the Nigerian government.
Utilizing a verse from the Quran to make his point, Aminu implores Dauda Lawal Dare, the Governor of Zamfara State, to "heed the call of God and immediately commence the peace process."
Aminu positions himself as a spokesperson not only for the bandits but for the residents of Zamfara State at large.
Reported initially on April 1, a prominent figure amongst the bandits in Zamfara State had counseled the Nigerian military to forsake its aggressive tactics in favor of dialogue.
In a recent video, Aminu, employing imperfect and halting English, calls for discussions between his faction and Nigerian officials.
"Representing Zamfara State (bandits), my message is to Dauda Lawal Dare. Dauda Lawal Dere 'ittakullaha' (fear God)!
"From today onwards, what we yearn for is peace, for only through peace can we coexist harmoniously in Zamfara State. The continuation of conflict will not lead us to peace. Achieving peace is what is expected of you.
"Observing the turmoil in eastern Africa, it becomes apparent that seeking a mutual resolution to our conflicts is imperative.
In addition, I must convey my message to the military, particularly to Tukur Usman Gusau, who has been ordering aerial bombings against us, the bandits.
Dauda Lawal Dare, as the governor and leader of Zamfara State, you must heed God's call. If you desire a peaceful Zamfara, bring together all Fulani leaders and 'Kachallas' (commanders of the bandits) for discussions that will be to everyone's advantage," the bandit leader appealed earnestly.
