U.S. President Biden Criticizes Japan, India, and Two Other Ally Nations for 'Xenophobic' Policies, Lack of Openness to Immigrants

During a campaign fundraising event, U.S. President Joe Biden labeled Japan and India—two of America's key allies—along with China and Russia, as nations whose growth is hindered by their xenophobic attitudes towards immigration.

His comments were reported by Al-Jazeera

According to Biden, these countries fail to capitalize on the economic benefits of embracing immigrants, which in contrast, fuels the expansion of the U.S. economy. “One of the reasons why our economy’s growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants,” Biden stated, marking the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Biden expressed concern over the economic stagnation in China, Japan, Russia, and India, attributing their challenges to a resistance to immigration. He emphasized, “Immigrants are what makes us strong.”

The remarks were unexpected, particularly since Japan and India are not only U.S. allies but also partners in the Quad security grouping, which strengthens their strategic cooperation. Recently, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the White House for a state dinner where both nations celebrated their robust partnership. Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed for a state visit last year, reinforcing the strong ties between the two countries.

Following Biden's comments, the White House moved quickly to mitigate any potential diplomatic fallout. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby clarified the intent behind the president’s statement. “The broader point the president was making is that the United States is a nation of immigrants, and it’s in our DNA,” Kirby explained. He reassured that America's allies are well aware of the president’s respect and appreciation for their friendship and contributions.

As of now, there has been no official response from either Japan or India regarding Biden’s remarks.
