Nigeria Police Confirm Officer Responsible for Shooting Death of Lagos Resident at Petrol Station Amid Fuel Scarcity Dispute

The Lagos State Police Command has identified the individual who fatally shot a man at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) mega filling station in Obalende, Lagos, as one of its own officers.

According to Reports, the victim, a man whose identity remains unknown, was killed on Wednesday evening amid a confrontation over fuel during the ongoing scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol.

The dispute escalated over whose turn it was to purchase fuel, leading to a fatal argument and scuffle during which the man was shot and the shooter immediately fled the scene. Initial witness accounts were divided; some identified the shooter as a policeman, while others claimed he was an operative from the Department of State Services (DSS). The DSS, however, has denied any involvement of their agent in the incident.

In response to the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the shooter was indeed a police officer assigned to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 17, Lion Building in Lagos. Hundeyin did not disclose the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

The police spokesperson assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and more details will be shared in due course. The police are also collaborating with the family of the deceased to ensure justice is served and to prevent any miscarriage of justice.
