Max Verstappen experienced a challenging time during the concluding part of the Sprint Qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix. The driver from the Netherlands found himself in the fourth position by the end of the session, following several excursions off the track due to its slippery state.
Coming off a strong performance in SQ2, where Verstappen led the pack, he faced increased rain in the last eight minutes of the session, which saw him, among others, struggling to maintain control on the wet Shanghai International Circuit.
After a few of his lap times were eliminated for not staying within the track boundaries, the driver from Red Bull had to settle for fourth. Despite this setback, he conceded that the finish was "deserved" because of the obstacles he encountered.
"It felt like navigating on ice," Verstappen elucidated. "Getting the tyres up to temperature was a significant struggle, making it nearly impossible to keep the vehicle on the path, it just did not activate as it should have for me."
He further explained, "That's the reason I believe the qualifying position is quite fair – things simply weren't falling into place for me under the wet conditions. Yet, we seemed rather solid in dry conditions, which of course, pleases me."
Despite the difficulties in qualifying, Verstappen is poised to start in a favorable fourth position for Saturday's Sprint. When questioned about his prospects in the forthcoming 100-kilometer race, the champion remarked, "Absolutely, it's far from ideal to kick off from the inside here.
"There's significantly less grip from left to right due to the painted sections on the asphalt. Our aim is to get off to the best start possible. I anticipate the stint on a singular set of tyres in the Sprint to be quite lengthy, but that certainly adds an element of intrigue."
Perez Faces Challenges, Ends in Sixth
On the opposite end at Red Bull, Sergio Perez showed promise in the initial stages of Sprint Qualifying, outperforming Verstappen in SQ1. However, as the weather took a turn, he found it more difficult to maintain his momentum, concluding the session in sixth place.
Perez reflected, "Everything started off well, then the combination of traffic and the need to slow down spoiled our last fast lap, especially since I couldn’t manage the final turn. Navigating that last corner was immensely challenging, leading to me veering off."
Despite the hurdles, given his earlier comfort with the RB20, Perez is optimistic about his performance in the season's first Sprint.
"We're in a strong position," he stated. "The car and I clicked instantly, making me confident about our competitive edge under any conditions, which is definitely a good sign moving forward."
