Head of Israeli Military Intelligence Steps Down Following October 7 Attack by Hamas

Major General Aharon Haliva

Major General Aharon Haliva, the head of Israeli military intelligence, has resigned following his acceptance of responsibility for the intelligence failures leading up to the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7.

"The announcement was made by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in a statement released on Monday, noting that Haliva’s decision was made in coordination with the Chief of the General Staff.

Haliva's leadership during the events of October 7 was cited in his resignation, as acknowledged in a statement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter: “The Head of the Intelligence Directorate, MG Aharon Haliva, has requested to end his position, following his leadership responsibility as the Head of the Intelligence Directorate for the events of October 7."

Reflecting on his tenure, Haliva stated in his resignation letter, “The intelligence division under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with. I" have carried that black day with me ever since." His career in the IDF spanned 38 years, where he contributed significantly to the security of the State of Israel, both as a combat soldier and commander.

The context of his resignation is the extensive conflict initiated on October 7, 2023, when Israel launched a war on Gaza in response to a deadly attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which resulted in over 1,100 deaths and the abduction of more than 250 people, with many still held captive. "This conflict has led to significant casualties and destruction, including the deaths of at least 34,049 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuries to 76,901 others.
